The Write Craft – Writing for Children

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

What was your childhood like? Was it full of adventure? Did you take regular holidays? What do you remember about being a kid, what stands out in your mind?

If you want to write for children you can but there are a few things to consider and a few questions to ask yourself.

Creativity doesn’t always come naturally and it doesn’t have to there are many things you can do to inspire yourself and gather ideas together. Don’t be fooled into thinking however that writing for children is easier than other types of writing. You will find it to be quite the other way around.

Ask yourself what your motivation is. Is it your love of children or maybe you’re just a big kid yourself. You will need to have passion not only for writing but for writing in a way that reaches out to children. Your story or stories will have to fill a need in their lives whether that need be for pure entertainment, silliness and laughter or reassurance, courage and love.

You will also need to have respect for children, they may not have a lot of life experience but you can’t fool them. Today they have so much more of the world right in front of them and even though they take so much of it in they really do still want to be kids.

If when you write you can draw on your childhood memories and imagination while at the same time consider what today’s kids are interested in you are off to a good start.

Tomorrow – What do children want to read?

Have a Great day :)

Anyone Can Draw

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

If you would love to draw but always say you can’t or don’t know how to well nows the time to reconsider.

Drawing isn’t really difficult, of course some people find it easier than others just like most other things in life. That doesn’t mean that you can’t learn a few tricks that with practice will have you drawing alongside the most capable drawers.

If drawing is something you love to do than why not. Here are few new ways to consider what it takes to call yourself a good drawer.

Drawing is a combination of lines carefully observed and put onto paper or other similar medium. To put simply, look, see, draw. The key is in learning how to ’see’.

When you look at an image you would like to draw consider what the simple shapes and lines are. Don’t get confused or bogged down by details drawing is a process that starts with the simplest form first and than slowly builds up to a completed picture.

So to start with you are just going to concentrate on drawing the simple lines and shapes first. Before you actually start to draw practice looking for these shapes and lines. You are already familiar with them and can also already draw them.

The basic lines are very closely related to the letters of the alphabet and with only slight adjustments will form your drawing, now remember this is just the beginning, once you have accomplised a few drawings and your confidence grows you will be able to produce more complicated pictures. The basic lines and shapes however will always be present.

Think Positive :)

Scrapbooking – The Birthday Party

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

What a great theme for a birthday party.

My daughter went to a friends 11th birthday party today with a scrapbooking theme. They all had a fantastic time, there was glue and glitter everywhere but there were some fantastic results.

The girls where all given a scrapbooking kit that consisted of a variety of twelve page mini scrapbooks (152mm x 152mm/6 ins x 6ins), printed page spreads, 72 alphabet stickers, 4 tags, 4 mini frames, 4 large frames and a variety of embellishments. The hostess added a few more things onto the table like glitter, ribbons, stickers  and stamps.

The kids all brought a bunch of their own photos some themed, others not but there was no shortage of creativity. The kits at this party were bought but making your own would work just as well, use a 6 in x 8 in gift bag to hold all the goodies.

These little kits are great for making keepsakes also and the possibilities for those are endless. Babies First Year, Favourite Things, People I Love, Things We Love to Do are a few ideas to get started with. Make some notes that help to explain the pictures and what they mean to you. Anyone who has lost someone close, will understand when I say, if you had something like this as a memory it would be very special.

Go and be creative :)
